john a. powell, Executive Director, Kirwan Institute for Race and Ethnicity at Ohio State University, demonstrates the major discrepancies between the opportunities historically provided to white people and those provided to African Americans in metropolitan Detroit. The Michigan Roundtable for Diversity and Inclusion

Southeast Michigan enjoys a rich heritage of interesting cultures. While these cultures have enriched the business and social environment of our state, there has also been conflict. Unfortunately, bigotry, prejudice, and discrimination remain. They are part of our lives and our region remains one of the most segregated in the United States.

The Michigan Roundtable is an organization committed to building bridges across differences in race, religion, ethnicity, age, gender, and other cultural characteristics that undercut our quality of life and competitiveness as a region. This broad-based approach, rather than singular constituency approach, in the end, will build a stronger, more inclusive social fabric in Southeast Michigan.

The Michigan Roundtable is a former affiliate of NCCJ, National Conference for Christians and Jews, which began in 1927 and started its work in Michigan in 1941. In 2006 our organization became its own 501(c)(3) nonprofit corporation and became a member of the National Federation for Just Communities (NFJC).
